Choosing a distribution

Different distribution release support life cycles vary widely from as little as 6 months to as long as 10 years. The RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux releases are generally supported for 10 years. Ubuntu long term releases are supported for 5 years, but their intermediate releases are only 6 months to a year. Debian releases are somewhat dynamic because it is community driven, so it is not as ideal for a production environment. Fedora releases are similar to the intermediate Ubuntu releases and are supported for only a short time after release. In general, for production environments, you want to stick to the RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux releases, or the Ubuntu long term support releases. Which distribution is best for you will often depend on your use and project requirements.
